What is Mozilla Philippines Community?
The Mozilla Philippines Community is the official community of Mozilla users and fans in our country. We believe this can be achieved via the spread of open tools like Mozilla Firefox, fitting these software via localization, and having relevant social interactions.

Can you tell me the brief history of Mozilla Philippines Community?
Last year, Mozilla had noticed that there was a significant usage of Mozilla Firefox in the Philippines and they wanted to strengthen their presence here. The community was jump-started last September 2009 when Gen Kanai and Seth Bindernagel went to the Philippines. They met me and shared the idea of Mozilla’s plans to build a community here. The rest is, as they say, is history.

Another thing, the Mozilla Philippines Community is also Mozilla’s link to our country and is a good way to promote it further, hopefully get developers involved, and ultimately have a Filipino Firefox.

Mozilla Philippines 2010 Kick-Off Meeting

Target Members?
Anyone, but the cooler ones tend to gravitate towards Firefox.

Can you give me info about your previous or upcoming Projects & Events?
As I’ve mentioned, one big target is a localized Mozilla Firefox. An event surrounding this will happen around 3rd or 4th quarter of the year. There is also most likely a Mozilla Firefox 4 Launch Party in the horizon.

Interview Via Email with Randell Benavidez a Software Engineer. He co-founded NullPointer.ph and established the start-up company, Mudspring Software Inc. He is also a Sun Certified Java Programmer.

1. What is NullPointer.ph
NullPointer.ph (http://nullpointer.ph/) is a question and answer site for the Filipino developer community that’s free. It is a collaboratively built and maintained platform where Filipino developers can exchange knowledge, regardless of programming languages or frameworks being used, company, university, or level of expertise. It provides aspiring developers a valuable resource that can fast track their learning by having immediate access to the minds of the experienced.

The Question and Answer Site for Filipino Developers

2.) Why did you establish NullPointer.ph?
We want to see a stronger community of developers within the Philippines. We have so much software development talent in the country. What we want is for those talents to share their knowledge and empower each other so that our country can be more competitive in the software development scene.

NullPointer.ph also aims to become a valuable resource for local (and foreign) companies to discover local developer talents that fit their organization through the reputation system.

3.) How does it work?
You have a software development problem? Ask your question on the site and see if someone has already solved a similar problem.

If you are experienced in coding and development then share your knowledge with your peers in exchanged for fame and recognition. If you ask good questions you get votes up.

If you post good answers, you get a votes up. The more great questions and answers you post, the more reputation points you get. You can also see how well you match-up with the other developers (http://nullpointer.ph/users/). You also earn different badges (http://nullpointer.ph/badges/) depending on your activity on the site.

Badges summary

4.) What’s Your Target Audience?
Professional and aspiring Filipino software developers. Right now, most of the members of the community are coming from the professionals on Luzon. We’re expecting to get more developers from Visayas and Mindanao and from the university level.

NullPointer.ph Users

5.) Is there anything else you want to add?
Earlier this year, we introduced the NullPointer.ph Job Board (http://jobs.nullpointer.ph/). It is niche job board focused on programmers and developers. The job board will bring together the best local and foreign companies and the best programmers from our country. It makes searching for the best developers easier because of the reputation system. It also makes it easier for our local developers to get the best possible jobs for them.

It covers everything from making the strategic platform decisions as to what kind of software to build, to understanding and winning the Angel and VC funding game, to the modern tools, apps and services that can cut months off development and marketing cycles, to how startups today are using Social Networks like Twitter and Facebook to create real excitement and connect to real customers.

Crush It!: WhyNow Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion by Gary Vaynerchuk – Everything has changed. The social media revolution has irreversibly changed the way we live our lives and conduct our business. There are billions of dollars in advertising moving online, waiting to be claimed by whoever can build the best content and communities. Despite this change, most people keep working at jobs that don’t make them happy and businesses continue to ignore the major marketing and public relations benefits that can be found online.

Getting Real by 37 Signals is the business, design, programming, and marketing philosophies of 37signals — a developer of web-based software used by over 1 million people and businesses in 70 countries. 37signals used the unconventional Getting Real process to launch five successful web-based applications (Basecamp, Campfire, Backpack, Writeboard, Ta-da List), and Ruby on Rails, an open-source web application framework, in just two years with no funding, no debt, and only 7 people.

Rework by Jason Fried – This book is filled with some great advice for those who want to start their own business, have their own business, or are just interested in the subject. This book is short, fast, sharp and ready to make a difference. It takes no prisoners, spares no quarter, and gives you no place to hide, all at the same time. This book is somewhat light on substance, however, it provides a decent antidote to all the demotivating process and bureaucracy that plagues business. Worth a read to be sure, even if just for the distraction.

How to Be a Rockstar Freelancer by FreelanceSwitch – Covering everything from getting started to expanding your business, How to Be a Rockstar Freelancer is the official FreelanceSwitch book. Written by Collis & Cyan Ta’eed – the founders of the site – it’s packed with new information, advice and insights not covered on the blog.

Making Ideas Happen by Scott Belsky – Though creation always begins with an idea, ideas don’t always lead to creation; examining why that’s so, online entrepreneur Belsky finds that, no matter how unique or radically different ideas may be, the individuals and teams who carry those ideas to fruition share a number of common traits, such as engaging peers and leveraging communal forces. This book chronicles the methods of exceptionally productive creative leaders and teams – companies like Google, IDEO, and Disney, and individuals like author Chris Anderson and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh – that make their ideas happen, time and time again.

Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. Like the small piece of hardware that keeps a wheel from falling off its axle, they may not be famous but they’re indispensable. And in today’s world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom.

Reality Check by Guy Kawasaki – If the two most popular words in your company are “partner” and “strategic,” and “partner” has become a verb, and “strategic” is used to describe decisions and activities that don’t make sense, it’s time for a reality check. Reality Check is a compilation of Guy’s best wit, wisdom, and contrarian opinions in handy book form. From competition to customer service, innovation to marketing, he shows readers how to ignore fads and foolishness while sticking to commonsense practices.

At th Google I/O conference at Moscone West, San Francisco, Google has announced “Google TV” a new experience made for television that combines the TV you know and love with the freedom and power of the Internet.

“Television is becoming the true third window, with the computer and the phone, allowing you to access what you want when you want it,” Eric Kim, who heads Intel’s digital home division, said in an interview. “The dumb tube is turning into an intelligent device, a smart TV.”

Watch Google TV Introduction Below!

Google TV (Credits: Gizmodo)

Sony will launch a full line of integrated TVs and a Blu-Ray player. Logitech will roll out a companion box that will allow the integration of Google TV into an existing set up.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt takes the stage with the heads of Sony, Logitech, Dish, Best Buy and Adobe.

Schmidt is playing the role of friendly interviewer, throwing softballs like why is Flash important to Google TV and will people go out and buy new TVs because of this news.

Ergen: “We think it’s going to grow our business and we think it will open up opportunity.”

“We already know our customers watch TV and then go to another room … and they watch stuff on the computer,” he adds. “We know they want to combine those things in a seamless way.”

Google TV - Record this program

Jack Dorsey is an American software architect and businessperson best known as the creator of Twitter. Throughout this work Jack witnessed thousands of workers in the field constantly updating where they were and what they were doing; Twitter is a constrained simplification designed for general usage and extended by the millions of people who make it their own every day.

Most of us have heard or have used Twitter and it has certainly been part of our social lives.

But how did it get started? Here is Jack Dorsey talking about his creation Twitter. In the video below he talks The 3 Keys to Twitter’s Success

At the 99% Conference, Twitter creator Jack Dorsey outlines his simple approach to making amazing ideas happen: drawing out the idea, gauging the right timing, and iterating like mad.

1) Draw: get your idea out of your head and share it

2) Luck: assess when the time (and the market) is right to execute your idea
